Notes for Stephen Johnson
From the Crete, NE News, March 23, 1934:
Steve Johnson, truck driver for the Crete Mills, was painfully but not seriously injured Monday afternoon when his truck went in the ditch near Beatrice. The steering wheel stuck and the truck got out of control and Mrs. Johnson jumped clear as it went into the ditch. The cause of his injury is not fully known. A farmer nearby took him to the hospital.1483

The Crete News
50 YEAR$.AGO [1941] December 11
Pictured in the Dec. 18 issue Of The News were ten men whose combined Years of service with Crete Mills totaled 332 years. Included in the group were S.S. Talhelm. A.L. Johnson, Frank Dennis, Fred Mair, Fred Yant, R.K. Johnson, Ben Johnson, A.L. - Johnson, Jr., Steve Johnson, and Earl Talhelm. S.B. Talhelm and A.L. Johnson had put in a combined total of 13 years of service at that time.1483

Stephen worked for the Crete Mills until WWII when he joined the Navy. He was at Camp Farragut, Idaho where he contracted rheumatic fever during the great epidemic which closed the Navy Base forever. After his medical discharge he located in Lincoln, Nebraska, and managed an off-sale beer store, the "Uneeda Market", from 1945 for several years. He then found employment at the Central Electric and Gas Company where he rose to supervisor of the high pressure pipeline system. He worked at the Gas company until his death, which was due to heart failure, a consequence of rheumatic fever.

Steve's hobbies included pheasant hunting and home repairs, from the roof and TV antenna to the sewer and basement walls. He knew how to repair about anything and often helped his friends and neighbors.

Steve and Ella had a cabin on the West Branch of the Blue River where the family spent many happy days trying to catch catfish, the delicacy of Nebraska, and the world, if you should ask.

On November 24, 1943, Dr. A.A. Conrad, M.D. of Crete Nebraska wrote the following recommendation for Steve Johnson:

To Whom It May Concern:
I have known Steve Johnson too damned long.
However I may say, without danger of contradiction, that he has considerable ability in first aid and actual exercise of that ability over a number of years having cared for minor accidents during his service with the Crete Mills. He has a large cup of the milk of human kindness and is most willing to help those in need.
He has a large hump of curiosity and considerable initiative.
I believe he has the stuff with which to carry through.
Signed
A.A. Conrad

After he married Ella Pearl Watson from Lincoln, NE and Council Bluffs Iowa, he was very happy. It is quite possible that he and Ella drank too much beer, which contributed to heart failure of both. He died by himself, at home, on January 17th and was buried at 2:00 PM, Friday, 21 Jan, 1971, Riverside Cemetery, Crete, Saline, NE, Rev James Tomlinson officiating.

His social security number is SSN-505-01-9853.
