(II) John (2) Kelly, son of John (1) Kelly, was born July 2, 1642, and died March 21, 1718. He was admitted freeman, May 19,
1669. In addition to the grant of land mentioned above, he received a grant of five acres of marsh, and also "the cutting of five acres
of meadow in Cypress Swamp, provided the Towne's Heards shall not be hindered, but have free Egress and regress through the
same at all times." His name was on the tax list of 1688, and in the history of Windham, New Hampshire, it is said that he was the
second largest farmer in Newbury. His house was situated at the foot of Gravel Hill before 1690. and doubtless before 1688. As
early as 1694, he moved from Oldtown to the "Upper Woods" in Newbury, now West Newbury, settling on Worth's Lane. He kept
a ferry at Holt's Rocks. In the long contest between the first church of Newbury and the Rev. Mr. Parker, John Kelly was in
sympathy with the pastor. On October 20, 1698, he signed the covenant of the second church of Newbury, and June 20, 1714, when
Rev. Mr. Tufts was ordained, he and his wife were members of the church. He signed his name John Kally and his wife signed
herself Sarah Kelly. He married (first) May 25, 1663, Sarah Knight, daughter of Deacon Richard Knight. She was born March 23,
1648, and died soon after 1714. He married (second) March 15, 1716, Lydia Ames, of Bradford. Children: Richard, born February
28, 1666; John, mentioned below; Sarah, born September 4, 1670; and Abiel, December 12, 1672. 194
