He belonged to the Baptists, and was a justice of the peace, and selectman in
Rehoboth. He commanded a Mass. Military Company, and was in General Spencer's
expedition against the British on Rhode Island. He and his son, Silvanus,237 were part owners in a number (8 +) of privateersmen
in 1782, and records indicate a remunerative business.

Lieut. Silvanus Martin,237 son of Captain Silvanus,236 b. 19 Mar., 1748; d. 25 Nov.,
1818; m. 6 Nov., 1774, Amey Brown,257 dau. of Col. William Brown256 and
Susanna Dexter.276 He was lieutenant of a company of militia against the British,
in Roxbury, and in 1776 captain of 19th Conn. Militia. A member of Providence Town
Council 1695-6-7-8 and representative to General Assembly 1790-1. He lived in
Rehoboth, Mass., East Windsor, Conn., and Providence, R. I. 210

John Martin came from England to America, and settled in Swanzey, about the year
1665. He married Johanna Esten, daughter of Thomas Esten, of Providence, now
North-Providence, and great-aunt to Esek Esten, Esq. who lives on the same farm
where John Martin married Johanna Esten from. Ephraim Martin, his son, was born in
1676. Thankful Bullock was born June 27, 1681. Edward Martin, son of Ephraim
Martin, was born Oct. 22, 1700. Rebeckah Peck was born Oct. 10, 1700. Edward
Martin and Rebeckah Peck were married Nov. 8, 1722. His second wife Martha
Washburn was born Feb. 27, 1693. Silvanus Martin, son of Edward Martin, was born
