Hi there,
I might also add this bit of information about Nicholas.
Arlene Tolson visited Iowa for genealogy research and found Nicholas Friend's grave. She reported:
"... I returned 3 wks ago from a genealogy trip to the mid-west where I took a picture of Nicholas Friend's tombstone.  He was buried in the "Centers Friend's Cemetery" at Newton, Jasper County, Iowa.  His tombstone reads "Nicholas Friend, died Dec 3, 1857, age 55 yrs., 3 mo., 1 day". Since I have copies of the probate records of Nicholas, there is no question that this is our ancestor.  On the Iowa State census of 1856 he is listed as 54 yrs. old.  It was exciting to see his tombstone, particularly because the cemetery recorders listed his birth incorrectly (5 yrs. earlier).  We now have a birth date of 2 Sep 1802."
Bye for now...Kathleen
