1101. 2014 12/20 mail from Loa Titman, loa.dave@sasktel.net

Hi Steve and Nancy
Yes e made it home safe and sound. I think we are still on Washington time...... Seem to be getting up later in the morning!
So sorry to hear about  you Nancy. Rugs will do that . So Steve will have to do the heavy lifting for awhile....just like our son in law, Justin. You know that saying that babies come when they want? Well Thursday dec 18 at  9:12am  Lindsay had a C- section to deliver a 6 pound 1 oz boy named  Cooper John Bergermannn! His brother Bruce was born two years earlier on Dec 20th. I guess Christmstime will always be a hectic time for them! Mom and babe will come home on Sat. - today!
We certainly enjoyed all of your hospitality and all of the greenery - we came back to the same old snow that we had had before we left.
Take care and Giod bless.
Thanks for letting us know. Love dave &Loa

1. I came across your extensive family list. I am related to Amy Bullard, sister of Jonathan Bullard, born Leeds, Ontario.
I did DNA testing with 23andme. I have hundreds of very distant cousins. I am hoping your list will help me find relationships.

Amy Bullard married James Ireland
I am aware of the Hiram Parish connection to the Bullard family.
Amy was one of 14 children of Josiah Bullard and Susan (Susannah) Sly.
Do you know of anyone who has done 23andme DNA testing?
Moses Brown is on your list. Is there a connection between him and the Browns of Colonial Rhode Island?
thanks

You asked if we have ever met. At this time I do not think so. The only large Johnson gatherings I have been to are.  Dr RK Johnson's funeral  in Arkansas and his 50th Wedding party in Conway along time ago.  Those are the only time I can think of right now.  Unless it was at Ben's house up on the hill for one of his Christmas or New Year parties.

Yes I still keep in touch with Mary Louise. She and my mother where always talking together. She was the only Johnson I talked with until you came along.

Speaking of Johnsons another one was heard from a week ago.  I received a certificate in the mail from one of my radio contest. In the envelope was short note Frandy Johnson.  He made a guess on the name and ask if  Van Chesser  was a relative.  So I have heard from two Johnson this year. I shot back another e-mail to him.  I think this has been great hearing from you guys.

Telling you about my family is kind of short. It is just my wife and I. No kids or any thing like that. We are both retried here. My wife Jo was a nurse for 20 + years.  She is the only child in her family.

I held duel status in the Nebraska National Guard.  That is a guardsmen and a full time employee. I retired out of the military at age 60. So I had over 39 years in uniform. I spent my time working on and about helicopters for them.  Retired out a Sergeant Major (E9).

Virginia's gang. Well we start off with the easy ones.

My dad is Jay (Julius) Strobl, Jr., my brother Lewis Steven Strobl and I am Mary Victoria Strobl Mackey.

Hi

Sorry, all I have is Martha Ann Vestal, born 6 Aug, 1939 in Riverside CA. Where did Anne live when you last had contact? Who was her husband?

For the record, I cannot find a Ray Strobl, or Steve or Victoria. What is your dad’s full name?

Here is a story about John Isaac Vestal who married Mary Ann Strobl:

" Jack was a Union Organizer in Sacremento, where he was attacked and left for dead. He was found alive and recovered in Arkansas. After his recovery he went back to Sacremento to his Union job, was again attacked and this time he was killed. This all happened soon after WWII.”

You might try to find Sarah Jane (Sally) Dankenbrink, daughter of Hattie Pearl Vestal. 20 years ago she lived in Houston, TX. Hattie Pearl was a Navy officer.

Also, you might try Ann (Tom) Nunnally Rucker, a distant cousin, 742 Lake Point Bluff, Clarkridge, AR 72623.

Good Luck, Steve

1122. THE BALTZER/BALSOR FAMILY IN
NORTH AMERICA
*****
THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHANNES CHRISTOPHER BALTZER
2003

1. Johannes Christopher BALTZER The BALTZER family came from Hessen in Northern Germany with the Foreign Protestant settlers of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Johannes Christopher BALTZER came in the "Sally" in 1752, he was listed as aged 41 and a butcher. The ship's list said he was "indebted for 3 1/2 freights, fee 264.12.0. He signed his name "Johannas Baltzer".
He had previously married in Germany Anna Elizabeth, who, after Christopher's death in 1755, married on 29 Jun 1756 Adam SHAFNER, recorded in St. John's Parish, Lunenburg as 'SCHAUFNER'. She died in Jul 1782. In 1764 two sons of Christopher moved to Granville Township and then in 1792 to Wilmot Township, Annapolis County. (W.A. Calnek in his History of Annapolis County, page 599, states that they came from the Palatinate on the Lower Rhine in Germany in 1752, however, research indicates they actually came from the northeastern part of Hessen).
W.A. Calnek (1822-1892), in his original manuscript prepared a profile of the family which was not printed in its entirety in the 1897 publication:
“A few years after the foundation of Halifax a number of German and Swiss settlers migrated from the Palatinate on the lower Rhine to this province. They were induced to do so by a proclamation by the then King of England, (who was at the time also ruler of Hanover), offering free grants of land in Nova Scotia to those of his German subjects who would settle on them, and assistance until they could provide for themselves and their families. In consequence of this offer there arrived in Halifax in 1752 a considerable number of immigrants mostly Germans among whom was one Christopher BOLSOR, with his wife, two sons and a daughter. The latter afterwards married Adam SCHAFNER another of these settlers, (whose former wife had died in childbirth on the passage out) by whom he had several additional children. Her father and brothers, after a residence of two years in the new capital, were settled in the new county, which from the nationality of its settlers, was called Lunenburg. Here they domiciled and pursued their labours as farmers and fisherman until about 1764 when they removed to Lower Granville in this county. The sons, Christopher and Peter were then unmarried. Their brother-in-law SCHAFNER became the owner, by purchase from Ebenezer WORTHYLAKE, one of the Massachusetts grantees, lot number one in Granville where he continued to live with his family until Jul 1782 when he died. This lot or portions of it are yet owned and occupied by some of his descendants.
“Peter BOLSOR removed to the Township of Wilmot and settled on Hanley Mountain where he reared a portion of his family and in whose neighbourhood a large number of his descendants are still domiciled. His brother Christopher sold out his lot or homestead - that now owned and occupied by Mr. Henry CALNEK - near the close of the past century and went into the township to which his brother had previously gone, where his father-in-law, the late Jonathan WOODBURY Senior, M.D., had sometime before taken up his abode. His descendants with one exception, also domiciled. One of his sons - the exception referred to - married and settled in the town of Annapolis where he died many years ago.
“Not many pioneer families have done more in the way laying the foundations of the prosperity which today characterizes the agriculture of the county. The aboriginal forests which once covered many a noble farmstead in Wilmot and Granville and also in Aylesford owe their removal to the hands of one or other of the Bolsor family. The following is a correct genealogical record of the descendants of their immigrant ancestor.”

There have been several variations in the spelling of this family name as it was anglizied during the early years in Annapolis County. The name BALSOR, BALSER and BOLSER appear in early Granville Township and Wilmot Township records. As late as the 1891 census these spellings were the most frequent used. However in more recent years some of the family have reverted back to the original spelling. Throughout this record I have tried to maintain the spelling use or used on behalf of the concerned individuals.
From "A List of Foreign and Other Settlers Victualled at Lunenburg in the Province of Nova Scotia Between 24th Jany 1757 and the 15th May Following Both Days Included" (PANS MG1, Vol 222 doc 2): No. 566 Gertrous BALTZER, Eve BALTZER, Henrich BALTZER, Peter BALTZER.
The family was not reflected in the 1770 Granville Township census however Peter did appear in the 1772 census. Christopher BOLSOR Jr. was listed in the 1770 and 1772 census records.
In 1818 a "Petition of Inhabitants of County of Annapolis on Subject of Paper Currency" the following signed: Andrew BALSOR, Christopher BALSER and Peter BALSER.
The following material is from the Dr. Winthrop Bell Family Papers, MG1, No 109,110,111 at PANS, SLC #1421430, 'Register of Lunenburg Settlers':
Halifax: Victulation List, Sep. - Oct 1752 (list No. 9) - Johannes, Anna Elizabeth, Anna Margareta, Anna Gerdauth, Anna Eva, Henrich Christian, John Peter BALTZER. Halifax: Victulation List Feb. - Apr 1753 - same names.
Lunenburg: Return of Arms, Dec 1753 - Johann BALTZER - Crieghton's Div. 30-acre farm lots, 1753-4 Apportionment List - Joh. BALTZER - N.W. Range -A1
Live Stock Distribution, 1754 - Johs. BALTZER and Johs. CELL: Lot No.68 of 1 cow and 1 sheep. BALTZER also got 2 sheep from 'Capt. Stuart Versett' in Dec 1754.
Baptism: 10 Aug 1753, Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth BALTZER (Roll II - Roll I has this same baptism under date 10 Oct 1752. But I think the 1753 date is rather to be accepted. If Elizabeth had been born in 1752 and had not died soon afterwards - which she did not do (see later Vict. Lists), she would have been in the Halifax Vict. List of Feb-Apr 1753)(10 Aug 1753 is confirmed from original)
Marriage: 17 Sep 1754 Bernard HERMAN and Catherina BALTZER (Roll II) Marriage: 18 May 1756 Johannes BOWER and Maria BALTZER (Roll II) Marriage: 29 Jun 1756 Adam SCHAUFNER and Elizabeth BALTZER (Roll II)

still registered in the name of a deceased settler was not unusual, if there were some heirs under age." Catherine HERMAN died 14 Nov 1779.
.. Adam SCHAFFNER Adam was aged 48 years in 1751. He died 22 Nov 1782. Adam migrated to Halifax 1752, came to Lunenburg 1754 and then to Granville 1770 where he settled on lot#1 in the lower section, Granville, which he bought from Ebenezer WORTHYLAKE. Adam married (1st) Anna MARGARETA who died 1752 on boat during childbirth of son Ferdinand SCHAFFNER who married to Barbara HAWBOLT before they arrived in Granville. Anna Elizabeth and Adam SCHAFFNER had 4 children:
Elizabeth BALTZER married 29 Jun 1756 at St. John's Parish, Lunenburg, Adam SCHAUFNER.
Children:
i. Catharina Elizabeth SCHAFFNER; m. 1777 Richard ARMSTRONG who was
b.1749 Sundee, Scotland and came to Halifax 1770, Granville 1776; they had 11 children, some who married BALTZERS- the 4th son William ARMSTRONG had a dau. Sarah ARMSTRONG who m. Aaron BALSOR and the 8th son Nelson ARMSTRONG m. 1825 to Mary BOLSOR (Frederick, Peter, Christopher);

ii. George Conrad SCHAFFNER; m. 1806 to Mary COLEMAN and had 3 known children;

iii. Elizabeth Barbara SCHAFFNER; m. John BAHAKER;

iv. Abigail SCHAFFNER; m. a WHITE;

2. Christopher Henrich BALTZER (Christopher) Christopher was born 12 Apr 1737 in Germany. He married 22 Aug 17751 in Annapolis area Lydia WOODBURY, born 1760, the daughter of Dr. Jonathan and Lydia (FOSTER) WOODBURY4. When they married in 1775, Christopher was aged 38 and Lydia aged 15 years. He was listed in the 1792 Tax of Wilmot and the 1794 Tax list. He was listed in the 1791 Poll Tax of Wilmot as "Stophal" BOLSER.
The pioneers of the WOODBURY families in Annapolis County were Jonathan and Isaac WOODBURY, who were uncle and nephew. They were descended from John WOODBURY, who was born about 1579, and came from Somersetshire, England, and settled at Salem, Mass., where he was a leading man, and was sent by his fellow colonists to England to secure a patent for their land. The line of descent of Jonathan is through his eldest son Humphrey, Thomas, Jonathan and Jonathan. Jonathan , born in Haverhill, Mass. in 1737, came first to Yarmouth, where in 1763, his household consisted of five members living on a one-acre lot on Cape Forchue River. Jonathan was a physician by profession; came form Yarmouth to Granville and thence to Wilmot, and died in 1830 aged 93 years. He married (1st) in 1760 in Massachusetts, Lydia FOSTER. She died in 1808. He married (2nd) 12 Dec 1811 in Nova Scotia, Lorena SABIN the daughter of Jeremiah SABIN. She died 10 Nov 1853 aged 80. Lydia WOODBURY, born in 1760, was Jonathan's first child.
Recorded 11 Sep 1779 in Annapolis County Register of Deeds: "Christopher BALSOR for 20 pounds sold to Joseph POTTER land on 'the south side of Annapolis River opposite to Goat Island, being part of the Cape Grant to the late Major Philips in 1759.' Part of Lot 5, 125 acres more or less on 1 Jul 1779" (Registrar of Deeds, Vol 4, page 50).
His ear mark was recorded in the Wilmot Township Register on 7 Mar 1795 "half crop and happenny under each ear:
On 7 Feb 1795 Jonathan WOODBURY of Wilmot (his father-in- law) for 100 pounds sold to Christopher BALSOR, yeoman, land on Wilmot Mountain "beside John ELLIOTT's land to Simon DeLONG's land, back to Bay of Fundy". This may have been the time Christopher moved from the

Page 16

Granville area to the Wilmot area. The transaction involved 300 acres. An indenture was made on 18 Sep 1800 between Christopher and Peter BOLSER also of Wilmot for 40 pounds against lot No. 7 in Wilmot Township. On 5 Aug 1804 Timothy RUGGLES of Granville for 50 pounds sold 532 acres of land to Christopher BOLSER of Wilmot, on Wilmot Mountain (Annapolis Deeds, Vol 14, p455, 481).
W.A. Calnek (1822-1892) in his original manuscript, prepared in the late 1800's, and the published "History of Annapolis County" has some errors in the listing of this family. His listing in the original manuscript with notes for comparison with publish work: (1) Foster, md. 1st Lydia BASS (dau Alden), 2nd Jane McNEILY (as published); (2) Peter, md., (abroad)(m. Phebe CLARK in book); (3) Jonathan WOODBURY, md. Ann S. THOMAS (as published); (4) Hiram, md. Minnetta PINEO, (but, m. (1st) Louise PINEO, 2nd Minetta PINEO in published book); (5) Lydia, md. HI Steve-
Thanks for all of the work you have done so far. I have no Idea if the early history is correct. We have back to John Henry titman and Sarah Ann Irwin Chugg.
Now for some strange reason, the email you sent that I received on our computer was not the same as the one that we received on the iphone. The pdf was empty except for a photo of our son Paul. And the  census was included in the email on the i phone. Strange.
However, I have tried to give some background info on Sarah's family. I have the census  of 1881. I am also sending the Baptism of Richard John Frederick George Titman, a map of London and suburbs, Burial record of Sarah Ann Irwin (Chugg) Titman and two pages of a school record (Pilton National School). I hope this will aid you in further research.

We are busy doing concrete ornaments- 12" balls, colt, dragon, bench and  legs this time around.. tomorrow we are going to Saskatoon for supplies..  It's been warm for January but is supposed to snow then turn cold by the weekend. I'll believe it when I get it!
Love Loa

Titman Family Tree
John Henry Titman
Born about 1850 in Norfolk, England(that’s a county don’t know the town)
According to 1881 census he was a bricklayer by trade.
John married Sarah Ann Irwin Chugg about 1876. They probably married in the Morthoe area as that is where Sarah was from. She came from a large family of 10-12. Sarah’s parents were John Chugg (1828-1887) and Elizabeth Irwin(1833-1897). (there are a lot of Chuggs in the area.) Sarah’s father farmed in the Morthoe area
.Sarah’s family is:
Louise Irwin Chugg b 1852- unk Married George Jones
Richard John Irwin Chugg b about 1854 married Harriet Eliza Landsdown
Sarah Ann Irwin Chugg b ~ 1856-1883 married John Henry Titman about 1876.
Sarah is buried with her parents and two siblings-George and Alaxandra in the Chugg family plot at St. Mary’s Parish church yard, Morthoe. Her name on the family monument is Chugg not Titman.
Elizabeth M. Irwin Chugg b. ~1858 , know nothing more about her.
George A.E. Irwin Chugg b~1863 died age 20 Jan 15, 1883.
Flora Honora Constance Irwin Chugg b~1865-1951 married Alfred Lee.
Lawrence Percival (Percy) Alexander Irwin Chugg b. 1867-1951 married Maude Florence Pile.
Walter F.J. Irwin Chugg b.~1870 married Ida Julia H. Symons. know nothing more of him.
Rose Gertrude Maud Mary Irwin Chugg b.~1872 married unk.
Alexandra Maria Caroline Victoria Irwin Chugg b. 1874 d. June 15, 1875.
There is also the possibility of two more siblings Beatrice and Clara but no conclusive proof.
Sarah’s family lived in and around the Morthoe, Ilfracombe, Barnstaple area of Devon county.
John and Sarah had two children: Elizabeth F. L. C. Titman b. ~1877
Richard John Frederick George Titman b. Aug 27, ~1879/1880 at Wandsworth, London ( I believe he was born in the smaller village of Clapham which is part of Wandsworth. Wandsworth is an old suburb of London- see the map. He went by Frederick George when in Canada. Fred joined the British Army to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. He was discharged as a Lance Corporal. He came to Canada in 1903. Fred married Susan Deosaghy Sept 5, 1904 at Whitewood, Sask.
From what we can piece together, Fred’s father John, a commercial traveller, (according to Fred’s baptism of 1881) died prior to Dec 25, 1881. His mother Sarah died in 1883 when he was about 3 years old.
We always were told his sister’s name was Lillian but according to records which I’ve sent you her first name was Elizabeth. (But those people like to have more than one name in their handle!)After their parents died they ( Fred and Elizabeth) went to live with Sarah’s sister Rosa in Morthoe. Later they moved to London.A question – what date was the 1881 census taken? As Fred was listed as 8 months old on that day and his sister 4 years old.
The reason I ask this question is in the Pilton National School records of Devon it lists his birthdate as Aug 27, 1879. AND his guardian is a G. Lee of Pilton. His Aunt Flora married an Alfred Lee so maybe it was him. Even though Aunt Rosa is supposed to have had guardianship. Also in the school register it says that he’s been in London before coming to Pilton. Fred left that school in Pilton and went to Morthoe.
Can you find out if his sister Elizabeth was also registered at Pilton school as she was older?
We didn’t have time to find John and Sarah’s marriage certificate and we did not find Sarah or John’s death certificate.

Onto your other question-Violet’s maiden name was Johnson. She married her first cousin Nels Johnson.

1180. Betts, Joseph Bio
Betts-Joseph Betts was born in Yorkshire, England, 8th mo., 23d, 1810, and peacefully passed away, 2d mo., 1, 1894, in the 84th year of his age. He was married to Rebecca West in 1830. They emigrated to America in 1838. To them were born five children. She died in 18l9. Two of their children survive them. He was married to Eliza M. Chantry at Philadelphia, Pa., 3d mo., 23, 1842. To them were born thirteen children, six of whom and his wife are still living to mourn their loss. He moved with his family from Pennsylvania to Iowa in 1855, settling in Guthrie County, near where Casey is now located. Enduring the hardships and privations of a new country. He was a liberal minded man ; while firm in his own convictions, yet always conceded to others the right to their opinions. He joined the Friends' Church in 1858, and was a consistent Christian in the truest sense of the word. He was one of those rare characters who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. And this gentleness of nature never deserted him. In his last illness he never complained. but bore all his suffering without a murmur. He was an indulgent parent, an affectionate husband, a kind neighbor and au exemplary citizen. He was a member and Elder of Casey Monthly Meeting of Friends. The funeral was held at the residence, conducted by the writer, after which his remains were followed by a large concourse of friends and laid to rest in the Friends cemetery.
