Woman's death still a mystery
ALBION — Nan Nedela of Grand Island wants to know who's responsible for the death of her sister, Candy Spiegel, 30 years ago.
Candace "Candy" Spiegel, 25, of Albion died of a gunshot wound to her head at her home on July 19, 1972. Results of a coroner's inquest in September 1972 were inconclusive as to whether her death was a suicide or homicide.

The case remains open.
"Candy and I weren't just sisters. We were best of friends," Nedela said. "I would like to see justice be done."
Nedela placed a half-page ad in the Albion News in July with a photograph of her sister. The ad read, "In loving memory. It's been 30 years — some remember, some have forgotten. God loves her, and God knows who did this."
Nedela described her sister and the events that occurred before and after her death.
Candy Spiegel was a 1965 graduate of Albion High School and married Ron Spiegel on March 12, 1965. She worked at Mike's Bar in Albion at the time of her death.
A photo in the July newspaper ad shows Spiegel in 1972 with her two children, Tammy, 7, and Rodney, 5, next to a pickup truck. The photo was taken at Spiegel's grandmother's home in Arizona about two weeks before her death.
Spiegel had found out that her husband was seeing another woman and planned to move with her children to Arizona and attend bartending school, Nedela said. Candy Spiegel signed divorce paperwork the day before her death, her sister said.
The night before Spiegel's death, Nedela watched her children while Spiegel was at work. Her sister picked them up shortly after 8 p.m. July 18.
"She gave me a hug and said she'd see me in the morning," Nedela said.
Instead, Nedela received a call from her father, Norris Nedela, on July 19 saying that Candy was dead. Norris Nedela learned of his daughter's death while listening to a police scanner. Ron Spiegel had found his wife's body about 1:30 a.m. July 19 after he returned home from his work as a security patrolman, according to 1972 news stories.
Nan Nedela went to her sister's home, saw where she had died in her bedroom and saw blood on the carpet in the living room. Nedela doesn't know why there would be blood in the living room if the death had occurred in the bedroom.
About three months after Candy Spiegel's death, Ron Spiegel remarried, Nedela said.
He had three brothers in law enforcement. Bob Spiegel was Albion's police chief, and Bill and Dick Spiegel were Boone County sheriff's deputies, Nedela said. Ron Spiegel later was Central City's police chief.
Nedela has a copy of a life insurance policy taken out for Candy Spiegel three months before her death on April 24, 1972, naming her husband as the beneficiary of $6,000 in the event of her death.
Nedela said she approached County Attorney David Medlin two years ago and asked him if evidence from the investigation had been destroyed. Her father had heard that evidence from the case had been burned.
Medlin's father, Ray Medlin, was county attorney and county coroner at the time of Spiegel's death, Nedela said.
Medlin did not return calls on Wednesday or Thursday and did not respond Friday to questions about the case.
Information about the case also was not available from the Nebraska State Patrol.
